The Dual Language Immersion Program at St. Patrick School
St. Patrick School is proud to introduce Dual Language Immersion to our school. This school year the Dual Language Immersion program includes Preschool through grade 2. Students in these grades will spend half of the day learning in English and the other half learning in Spanish for TK/K . 90% of the day in Spanish and 10% of the day in English for grades PS/PK. For 2021-2022, the Spanish Immersion program will continue to third grade. In every year after that, the program will grow to one more grade level until it reaches 8th grade. We combine bilingual education, intimate private school setting, and holistic values-based education. Interest from native Spanish speaking families as well as non-native speakers of the language has been overwhelmingly positive. School morale, students self perceptions as language learners, and enrollment have all increased since implementing dual language immersion. Information about Dual Language Immersion Programs Students are taught core academic subjects in both English and Spanish. Over the course of several years students gain full language proficiency and literacy. By learning two languages, our students will develop communication skills, empathy, cultural understanding, and acceptance in order to change their world for the better. |

Dual Language Learning Progression
In the early grades, students explore their world guided by teachers using two languages. They are exposed to vocabulary and proper usage through their daily interactions. Teachers engage students in each language to promote the ability in both. In this early stage our teachers plan the seeds of comfort and confidence in two languages
|
As they grow, students are taught academic subjects in both English and a partner language. For example, students study math in Spanish while learning history in English. Soon they become able to listen, speak, read and write in two languages
|
Although it can take time to become fully fluent in two languages, studies have shown that dual language students academically outperform their monolingual peers by the time they graduate 8th grade

The Need for Dual Language Immersion Schools
Our area includes diverse, multi-lingual communities from across the three counties (Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara) that comprise the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. 224 languages and dialects are spoken in Los Angeles, among them 92 languages have been specifically identified among students in LAUSD; of these, the top three languages spoken are English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
How Our School Meets Those Needs
Immersed in language, culture, and faith our students will graduate with the ability to navigate larger social networks and communities better and provide significant advantages to participate and lead in their communities and anywhere that their continued education and career aspirations will take them. Our teachers are strengthened through GLAD training which provides them with the tools to help students' language acquisition.
